Unifying Forces: 1Sambayan Launches Historic Opposition Slate

On March 18, 2021, a coalition of anti-administration forces came together to form the unified opposition slate ‘1Sambayan’ for the 2022 national elections. Led by retired Supreme Court Justice Antonio Carpio, the coalition aims to field a single ticket of candidates who will run against President Rodrigo Duterte’s preferred successor and other administration bets.

Initial discussions have been held with potential candidates, including Manila Mayor Isko Moreno, Senators Nancy Binay and Grace Poe, Vice President Leni Robredo, and former Senator Antonio Trillanes IV. Carpio emphasized the coalition’s openness to suggestions and nominations from all quarters, promising a thorough vetting process.

The coalition will screen candidates based on their track record, stance on key issues, policy platforms, and competence. Convenors include notable figures such as Carpio Morales, Armin Luistro, Albert del Rosario, Heidi Mendoza, Neri Colmenares, Magdalo party-list, and labor groups.

Carpio expressed confidence that the coalition’s diversity would not hinder their objective of a unified opposition. He noted that contributors will rally behind a viable candidate, emphasizing the importance of unity in achieving victory in 2022.
