As the Philippines navigates the complexities of the South China Sea dispute, Supreme Court Senior Associate Justice Antonio T. Carpio has emphasized the need for the country to file a new arbitration case to assert its rights in the area.
Carpio's call comes as China and Vietnam continue to insist on their claims over Sandy Cay, a disputed reef in the South China Sea.
The senior justice pointed out that the Philippines has not yet exhausted all avenues for resolving the dispute through arbitration, citing the landmark Arbitral Tribunal ruling in 2016 that invalidated China's nine-dash line claim.
'The arbitral award is still valid and binding on both parties,' Carpio noted, highlighting the importance of upholding the rule of law in international relations.
With tensions remaining high in the South China Sea, Justice Carpio's warning serves as a timely reminder for the Philippine government to take proactive steps in protecting its interests and asserting its sovereignty over the disputed territory.
