Former Supreme Court Associate Justice Antonio Carpio has provided critical insights on the Philippines’ potential to hire foreign companies for gas exploration and extraction in the Reed Bank area. In a recent interview with ANC’s Headstart, Carpio emphasized the importance of exploring all available options to assert the country’s rights over its marine resources.
Carpio pointed out that under international law, states can engage foreign companies to explore and extract natural resources within their exclusive economic zone (EEZ). He noted that this approach would not only facilitate the development of Reed Bank but also demonstrate the Philippines’ commitment to responsible resource management.
However, Carpio warned that any agreement with foreign entities must be carefully crafted to ensure that it aligns with national interests and respects the country’s sovereignty. He stressed the need for transparency and accountability in all dealings related to the exploration and extraction of natural resources.
