Philippine Bar Association Offers to Host Public Debate Between Carpio and Marcoleta

The Philippine Bar Association (PBA) has offered to serve as host and convenor for the proposed public debate between retired Supreme Court Senior Associate Justice Antonio T. Carpio and Senator Rodante Marcoleta on issues concerning the West Philippine Sea.

The Association said it stands ready to provide a neutral and secure venue suitable for media coverage and public access, as well as professional moderators with expertise in constitutional and public law, clear debate protocols, and arrangements for livestreaming to ensure transparency.

The offer follows Justice Carpio’s acceptance of Senator Marcoleta’s challenge for a “friendly debate” on the legal and constitutional dimensions of the West Philippine Sea and the Philippines’ maritime entitlements.

In its statement, the PBA emphasized the importance of a civil, fact-based exchange of ideas that can help improve public understanding of complex legal issues involving maritime rights and international law. The Association has also expressed its willingness to coordinate with both parties to finalize the details at their convenience.
