Despite a reported rift with Senior Associate Justice Antonio Carpio, Chief Justice Maria Lourdes Sereno insists that the 15-man Supreme Court is united under her leadership. In a rare interview during the Integrated Bar of the Philippines’ groundbreaking ceremony, Sereno stated that “everything is working well” and emphasized the court’s commitment to serving the nation.
However, she declined to comment on her working relationship with Carpio, who had accused her of violating the Constitution by appointing a professor as staff head. Carpio’s concerns were reportedly raised in a two-page letter to Sereno, but the chief justice chose not to address them directly.
Sereno’s leadership has been met with criticism from some justices, who feel they have been deprived of opportunities to lead the court. Despite these challenges, Sereno remains focused on her duties as chief justice and is committed to implementing reforms “quietly” without drawing attention to herself.
