Philippines’ West Philippine Sea Sovereignty at Risk with Marcos Presidency

Renowned retired Supreme Court justice Antonio Carpio has voiced his concern over the Philippines’ sovereignty in the West Philippine Sea (WPS) under a potential Ferdinand ‘Bongbong’ Marcos Jr. presidency.

Carpio, a senior associate justice and member of 1Sambayan, expressed his fear that if Marcos wins the presidential election, the country will likely lose the WPS to China due to inaction from the Duterte administration’s six-year term and Marcos’ previous statements indicating he would abandon the arbitral award.

He emphasized the need for a president who will defend the Philippines’ sovereign rights in the WPS, stating that such a leader must be elected by the youth to ensure their marine resources, oil, gas, and fisheries are preserved for future generations.

Carpio’s advocacy aligns with 1Sambayan’s support for Leni Robredo’s presidential bid, as she has pledged to utilize the Philippines’ Hague court victory against China’s militarization in the WPS.
