Retired Supreme Court Senior Associate Justice Antonio Carpio has sounded the alarm over China’s plans to build an artificial island on Escoda Shoal. This move, he warns, will have far-reaching consequences for the Philippines’ energy security.
The presence of Chinese vessels near Escoda Shoal, including research ships and militia vessels, has raised concerns about China’s intentions. According to Commodore Jay Tarriela of the Philippine Coast Guard, the mere presence of their vessels has deterred China from continuing illegal reclamation activities.
Carpio points out that Escoda Shoal is strategically located near Recto Bank, which is rich in gas reserves estimated to be two to three times larger than Malampaya. If China builds an outpost on Escoda Shoal, it could effectively block the Philippines’ resupply operations to Ayungin Shoal and compromise its energy security.
The incident highlights the need for the Philippines to defend its maritime territories and protect its interests in the South China Sea. With China’s aggressive expansionism, the region is becoming increasingly volatile, threatening regional stability and security.
