Retired Supreme Court Senior Associate Justice Antonio Carpio has cautioned President Ferdinand ‘Bongbong’ Marcos Jr. against issuing statements that could be perceived as ambiguous on the West Philippine Sea issue.
Carpio emphasized that there is no gray area in the discussions, citing the 2016 ruling of the Permanent Court of Arbitration in The Hague, which invalidated China’s historical claims and reaffirmed the Philippines’ exclusive economic zone (EEZ) under the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea.
The retired justice urged Marcos to be careful in his statements, warning that they could confuse the country’s allies and provide aid and comfort to China. Carpio also suggested that the Philippines should call on United Nations member-states to condemn China’s actions as these violate the UN Charter and UNCLOS.
