Strengthening Global Support for the Philippines’ Territorial Rights

Senior Associate Justice Antonio Carpio advocates for taking the Philippines’ territorial dispute with China to the United Nations General Assembly. He believes that by doing so, the country can garner support from a majority of UN member states, including major economic powers like those in the European Union, Group of Seven, and India.

Carpio emphasizes that these countries will back the Philippines because they wish to preserve their own exclusive economic zones. By supporting the Philippines’ claims, these nations are safeguarding their own interests.

As the Philippine government continues to assert its rights in the South China Sea, Carpio stresses the importance of international backing. He believes that with a united global stance, China will feel pressured and isolated, making it less likely to resort to force.
