Retired Supreme Court Senior Associate Justice Antonio Carpio has raised concerns over the possibility of China establishing a monitoring station in Bajo de Masinloc, a disputed area in the West Philippine Sea. According to Carpio, the Chinese structure could mirror the radar weather station set up by China on Fiery Cross Reef in 1987, which later transformed into an air and naval base.
Carpio’s warning comes at a time when tensions between the Philippines and China remain high over issues of maritime sovereignty and territorial integrity. The retired justice has been a vocal advocate for the country’s claims in the South China Sea, emphasizing the importance of international law and diplomatic efforts to resolve disputes peacefully.
