Chief Justice Renato Corona has denied allegations made by Lauro Vizconde that he or any other member of the Supreme Court influenced the acquittal of Hubert Webb in the 1991 massacre case. According to Corona’s spokesman, Jose Midas Marquez, the Chief Justice was ‘very surprised’ by Vizconde’s accusations and had met with him in July last year to congratulate him on his appointment as Chief Justice.
During their meeting, Vizconde discussed the killing of his wife and daughters, which led to a discussion about the DNA testing. Marquez stated that Vizconde appeared upset about the court granting the DNA testing and accused Corona of conniving with Justice Antonio Carpio in delaying the resolution of the case.
The Supreme Court had previously acquitted Webb and six others on December 14 last year, denying Vizconde’s motions for reconsideration. The Chief Justice has maintained that he did not issue any statements suggesting he lobbied for Webb’s acquittal and that it is not in his character to do so.
