Acting Chief Justice Antonio Carpio has maintained his integrity despite being implicated in the impeachment of former Chief Justice Renato Corona. In a Judicial and Bar Council hearing, Carpio clarified that he respected the Constitution and had no involvement in Corona’s ousting from office.
Carpio dismissed allegations that he was involved in plotting with President Benigno Aquino III and Secretary Mar Roxas to remove Corona from his position.
He explained that he chose not to inhibit himself from cases related to Corona’s impeachment, as he wanted to ensure the rule of law was upheld. Carpio emphasized that the court was separate from the individual being impeached and that only the latter should be held accountable.
