Carpio Warns Against Allowing Unconstitutional Chinese Fishing Activities in PH EEZ

Senior Associate Justice Antonio Carpio has sounded the alarm on the issue of Chinese fishing activities within the Philippines’ Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ). He argues that allowing such practices is a clear violation of the Constitution. The controversy arose after President Duterte expressed concerns about stopping Chinese fishing in Recto Bank, citing difficulties in doing so.

Carpio emphasizes that the Philippine government has a duty to protect its sovereign rights and ensure the sustainable use of its EEZ resources. He believes that any compromise on this issue would undermine national sovereignty and set a dangerous precedent for future disputes with other countries.

The Supreme Court Justice’s stance is significant, given his deep understanding of constitutional law and international maritime law. His views carry considerable weight, particularly in light of the growing tensions between the Philippines and China over territorial claims and resource management.
