Filipinos Patiently Wait for Duterte to Assert West PH Sea Rights

Supreme Court Senior Associate Justice Antonio Carpio attributes the public’s trust in President Rodrigo Duterte to their patience. Filipinos are giving the President time to assert the country’s rights over territories in the West Philippines Sea, he explained.

A recent survey showed that eight out of 10 Filipinos still trust Duterte despite a majority wanting the Philippine government to regain control over islands occupied by China in the WPS.

Carpio believes that Filipinos are waiting for the President to uphold his promise to assert the country’s claims, which was ruled upon by the Permanent Court of Arbitration in 2016. As the term is halfway through, the public may be saying ‘this is what we want but we’re giving you time’, he said.
