Opposition Coalition Unveils Unified Slate for 2022 Elections

Retired Supreme Court Justice Antonio Carpio has led the formation of a unified opposition coalition, ‘1Sambayan,’ which aims to field a single slate of national candidates in the upcoming May 2022 elections. The coalition includes several prominent anti-administration forces who vow to run against President Rodrigo Duterte’s preferred successor and other bets.

The group has already initiated discussions with potential candidates for president or vice president, including Manila Mayor Isko Moreno, Senators Nancy Binay and Grace Poe, Vice President Leni Robredo, and former Senator Antonio Trillanes IV. However, Davao City Mayor Sara Duterte and Senator Manny Pacquiao will not be endorsed due to their affiliation with the current regime.

The coalition’s vetting process involves surveys and interviews of potential candidates, focusing on their track record, stand on important issues, policy platform, and competence. The convenors believe that unity is key to success in 2022.
