Duterte Defends West Philippine Sea Stance as Carpio Threatens Lawsuit

MalacaƱang has challenged retired Supreme Court Justice Antonio Carpio to file a lawsuit against President Rodrigo Duterte over the latter’s remark on the arbitral ruling in the West Philippine Sea. The Palace sees no merit in Carpio’s claim that Duterte’s statement is an impeachable offense.

In a press briefing, Presidential Spokesperson Harry Roque clarified that citizens have standing to intervene in impeachment proceedings, citing his own experience in seeking a Supreme Court remedy against then-Chief Justice Hilario Davide. However, he emphasized that the Philippines has not lost any territory to China during Duterte’s administration.

Despite Carpio’s assertions, the Palace maintains its stance on the West Philippine Sea issue and the arbitral ruling, which rejected China’s claim of sovereignty in the entire South China Sea.
