Justice Carpio Warns of Impeachment Proceedings Against Duterte Over WPS Issue

Retired Supreme Court Associate Justice Antonio Carpio has expressed concerns that President Rodrigo Duterte may face impeachment proceedings due to his failure to protect the West Philippine Sea. According to Carpio, the Constitution mandates the government to defend the country’s territorial rights, and Duterte’s inaction constitutes a breach of this duty.

Carpio pointed out that the government’s inaction has allowed China to continue its aggressive expansion in the region, putting the Philippines’ sovereignty at risk. He emphasized that the President’s failure to enforce the Constitution is a ground for impeachment under Article XI of the 1987 Charter.

The Palace, however, dismissed Carpio’s claims, insisting that Duterte has not violated any constitutional provision. The administration maintained that it is committed to defending the country’s territorial integrity and sovereignty.
