As the May 2022 elections draw near, opposition coalition 1Sambayan has a contingency plan in place. According to lead convenor Justice Antonio Carpio, if Vice President Leni Robredo declines the presidential nomination, the group may choose between Manila Mayor Isko Moreno and former Senator Antonio Trillanes IV.
Although Carpio remains hopeful that Robredo will accept the endorsement and join the presidential race, he emphasized that the coalition has a theoretical backup plan. This involves selecting either Moreno or Trillanes to run under the 1Sambayan banner.
Moreno and Trillanes have already expressed their willingness to undergo the selection process. While Robredo remains the overwhelming choice for the presidential nomination, her decision will be crucial in determining the coalition’s next move.
