Justice Carpio on PH-US Partnership as Last Defense Against China’s Ambitions

Retired Supreme Court Senior Associate Justice Antonio Carpio recently stressed the significance of the Philippines’ partnership with the United States in maintaining regional security. In a recent interview, he underscored that this alliance serves as the country’s ‘only defense’ against increasing Chinese aggression in the South China Sea.

Carpio, a renowned expert on international law and maritime disputes, emphasized the importance of strengthening ties with key partners to counterbalance Beijing’s assertive stance. He noted that the bilateral partnership with the US is crucial for upholding the rule of law and ensuring freedom of navigation in the disputed waters.

The Justice also highlighted the need for collective action among Southeast Asian nations to address the pressing issue of China’s territorial claims. He emphasized that by working together, these countries can effectively assert their rights and interests without compromising their sovereignty.
