Justice Carpio Clarifies PH’s Stance on One China Policy

Renowned constitutional expert and former Supreme Court Associate Justice Antonio Carpio recently shared his insights on the Philippines’ adherence to the One China policy. In a recent interview, Carpio emphasized that the Enhanced Defense Cooperation Agreement (EDCA) with the United States is not related to this policy. He clarified that the EDCA’s primary purpose is to enhance defense cooperation and promote regional stability in Southeast Asia.

Carpio pointed out that the Philippines has consistently maintained its commitment to the One China policy, which recognizes Taiwan as a part of China. However, he noted that this does not preclude the country from engaging in economic activities with Taiwan or participating in international organizations where Taiwan is represented. The EDCA, Carpio emphasized, is focused on strengthening military cooperation and joint exercises between Philippine and US forces.

Justice Carpio’s expert analysis highlights the need for a clear understanding of the Philippines’ foreign policy positions and their implications for regional dynamics. His clarification on the EDCA’s purpose serves as a valuable contribution to ongoing debates on national security and international relations.
