Retired Supreme Court Senior Associate Justice Antonio Carpio believes that bringing the South China Sea dispute to the United Nations (UN) General Assembly could be a winning strategy for the Philippines. During a recent virtual forum, he emphasized the importance of seeking the support of majority UN member states in pressuring China to comply with the 2016 Permanent Court of Arbitration ruling.
Carpio pointed out that several key countries, including those from the European Union and Group of Seven, would likely side with the Philippines in this matter. He explained that these nations are concerned about preserving their exclusive economic zones and do not want China to set a precedent for seizing neighboring territories.
The former SC justice stressed that bringing the issue to the UN General Assembly is crucial in making China feel isolated and pressured to comply with international law. With world opinion on its side, Carpio expressed confidence that the Philippines will win the vote and secure China’s compliance with the 2016 arbitration ruling.
