Retired Supreme Court Justice Antonio Carpio urged President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. to be cautious when issuing statements on the West Philippine Sea (WPS) issue. Carpio expressed concern that Marcos’ comments could confuse the Philippines and its allies, as well as provide comfort to China.
In a recent interview, Carpio pointed out that there is no gray area in the UN ruling that invalidated China’s historical claims in favor of the Philippines’ exclusive economic zone (EEZ). The Permanent Court of Arbitration in The Hague ruled in 2016 that Ayungin Shoal is a low-tide elevation and forms part of the EEZ.
Carpio emphasized that only the coastal state, in this case, the Philippines, can put up structures in the WPS. He warned that China has no right to stop the Philippines from doing so. Carpio also called on the Philippines to condemn China’s actions as they violate the UN Charter and UNCLOS.
