Justice Carpio: Philippines’ Maritime Rights in Jeopardy as China Rebukes PH for ‘Trespassing’

Former Supreme Court Associate Justice Antonio Carpio has sounded the alarm on the increasing tensions in the West Philippine Sea, where China’s statements have taken a confrontational tone. According to Carpio, China’s claims of the Philippines trespassing into its waters are unfounded and challenge the country’s legitimate maritime rights under international law.

Carpio emphasized that the Philippines has been consistent in upholding its sovereignty over the disputed territories, citing the historic and legal basis for its claim. He pointed out that China’s aggressive stance is a threat not only to the Philippines but also to other countries with similar claims in the region.

In an interview with ANC, Carpio called on the government to strengthen its position through diplomatic efforts and strategic engagement with other nations. He also underscored the importance of upholding the rule of law and ensuring that international treaties are respected.
