Justice Carpio Sees Marcos’ Foreign Policy Shift in West Philippine Sea

Former Supreme Court Associate Justice Antonio Carpio expressed his surprise at the shift in President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.’s foreign policy regarding the West Philippine Sea. In a recent interview, Carpio noted that the Philippines’ foreign policy under Marcos has shown some improvement compared to previous administrations.

Carpio pointed out that the Reed Bank exploration is a litmus test for the new administration’s commitment to defending the country’s territorial rights in the disputed waters. He emphasized the importance of upholding international law and protecting the nation’s sovereign rights.

The former Justice reiterated his stance on the need for the Philippines to assert its claim over the West Philippine Sea, citing historical and legal grounds. He also stressed that any compromise or concession should be based on a clear understanding of the country’s legitimate interests and rights.

Carpio’s remarks come as the Philippines continues to face challenges from China in the disputed waters. The ongoing Reed Bank exploration is seen by many as a critical test of the new administration’s resolve to protect the nation’s interests in the West Philippine Sea.
