As tensions continue to escalate between the Philippines and China over fishing rights in the Scarborough Shoal, Justice Antonio Carpio’s stance on the matter has gained renewed attention. In a recent interview with ANC’s Karen Davila, Carpio emphasized the importance of establishing clear ground rules for fishing activities in the disputed territory.
Carpio argued that the West Philippine Sea is an integral part of the country’s Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ), and therefore, its resources are subject to Philippine jurisdiction. He stressed that the government must take a firm stance against China’s continued harassment of fisherfolk and vessels in the area.
The former Supreme Court Associate Justice also highlighted the need for diplomatic efforts to resolve the dispute amicably. Carpio proposed that the Philippines should engage in dialogue with China to establish a mutually acceptable framework for fishing activities, while also ensuring the country’s sovereignty over its territorial waters.
