Retired Supreme Court Justice Antonio Carpio warns that the West Philippine Sea dispute is an issue that will be passed down to future generations. As part of a BBC panel discussion, Carpio stated that China’s aggressive behavior towards Philippine troops will not subside anytime soon.
Carpio attributed China’s stance to its claim that the disputed waters are national territory, including the high seas of the South China Sea. He emphasized that this claim is problematic, as the high seas belong to humanity, not a specific nation.
The Philippines faces significant challenges in defending its territorial claims against China’s powerful navy and nuclear capabilities. However, Carpio urged Filipinos not to give up their sovereignty without a fight.
