Carpio: The Philippines’ Sovereignty in its EEZ Demands Recognition

Former Supreme Court Associate Justice Antonio Carpio has once again underscored the importance of upholding the Philippines’ sovereignty over its Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ). In a recent interview, Carpio expressed his concerns regarding the alleged ‘gentleman’s deal’ between former President Rodrigo Duterte and China. According to Carpio, this agreement is not only disadvantageous but also does not apply to formal country policy.

Carpio pointed out that the Philippines does not need China’s permission to explore its own EEZ, emphasizing the country’s sovereignty over its territorial waters. He stressed that any negotiations with China should be based on international law and not on informal agreements that may compromise the country’s interests.

The issue of the West Philippine Sea has been a long-standing concern for the Philippines, with Carpio being a vocal advocate for the country’s rights in this regard. His insights and expertise have shed light on the complexities of this issue, making him a respected voice on matters related to international law and diplomacy.
