Carpio Warns Against Amendments to Constitutional Provisions

Former Supreme Court Associate Justice Antonio Carpio has expressed concerns about amendments to certain provisions in the 1987 Constitution. According to him, these changes could have far-reaching consequences and compromise the powers of the judiciary.

Carpio pointed out that recent laws allowing increased foreign ownership of public utilities may be unconstitutional. He argued that such investments could put the country at risk and undermine its sovereignty.

He cited Vietnam as an example where foreign ownership in certain sectors is limited, and emphasized the need for reciprocity when it comes to foreign investment agreements. Carpio also criticized the manner in which some laws were passed, citing instances of corruption and influence peddling.

The former justice urged lawmakers to carefully consider the implications of their actions and ensure that they align with constitutional principles.
