Justice Carpio Warns Against China’s ‘Tila Pag-reclaim’ in Sabina Shoal and Pag-asa Cay

As tensions between the Philippines and China continue to escalate, retired Supreme Court Associate Justice Antonio T. Carpio has sounded the alarm on the need for the country to take a firm stance against China’s perceived attempts to reclaim territories within its Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ). In a recent interview, Justice Carpio emphasized that the Philippines must not allow China to get away with its ’tila pag-reclaim’ tactics in Sabina Shoal and Pag-asa Cay.

Justice Carpio pointed out that the Philippines has a strong legal foundation to support its claim over these territories, citing the 2016 ruling of the Permanent Court of Arbitration (PCA) which invalidated China’s nine-dash line claim. He argued that any attempt by China to reclaim or occupy these areas would be a clear violation of international law and the Philippines’ sovereignty.

Carpio further stressed that the Philippine government must take concrete steps to prevent China from executing its plans, including issuing strong diplomatic protests and engaging in dialogue with other countries to build a united front against Chinese aggression. He also emphasized the need for the country’s military and defense forces to be prepared to defend its territories.

The warning comes as China has been accused of constructing artificial islands and reclaiming territories within the Philippines’ EEZ, sparking concerns over the country’s sovereignty and security.
