Antonio Carpio Weighs in on China’s West Philippine Sea Actions Amid PH Maritime Council Remarks

Former Supreme Court Associate Justice Antonio Carpio has once again taken the center stage in discussions surrounding the Philippines’ maritime disputes with China. In a recent interview, Justice Carpio shared his insights on the latest developments in the West Philippine Sea, specifically addressing the remarks made by the PH Maritime Council regarding China’s actions in the region.

As a renowned expert on international law and the country’s territorial claims, Justice Carpio’s perspective is invaluable in understanding the complexities of the issue. He emphasized the importance of upholding the Philippines’ sovereignty over its maritime territories and the need for the government to take a stronger stance against China’s aggressive actions.

Justice Carpio also highlighted the significance of the Hague-based Permanent Court of Arbitration (PCA) ruling, which in 2016 invalidated China’s sweeping claims in the South China Sea. Despite this ruling, China continues to occupy and build structures on disputed territories, sparking tensions between the two nations.

In light of these developments, Justice Carpio stressed the need for the Philippines to work with other countries in the region to counterbalance China’s growing influence. He also emphasized the importance of promoting a rules-based international order and upholding the principles of international law in resolving maritime disputes.
