Carpio Advocates Court-Driven Solution to EEZ Dispute with Vietnam and Malaysia

Former Supreme Court Associate Justice Antonio Carpio is urging the Philippine government to consider taking its claims against overlapping Exclusive Economic Zones (EEZs) in the West Philippine Sea to court, rather than solely relying on diplomatic efforts. In a recent interview, Carpio emphasized the importance of using international law to resolve the dispute with Vietnam and Malaysia.

Carpio’s suggestion comes amidst ongoing tensions between the Philippines and its Southeast Asian neighbors over maritime boundaries. The country has long claimed sovereignty over areas within its EEZ, including the West Philippine Sea, but disputes have arisen due to overlapping claims by other nations.

The former justice pointed out that international law provides a framework for resolving such disputes through arbitration or litigation. By pursuing this path, Carpio believes that the Philippines can avoid further escalation and achieve a more lasting solution. He also emphasized the need for the country’s leaders to prioritize the rule of law in addressing territorial issues.
