Former Supreme Court Associate Justice Antonio Carpio recently shared his thoughts on the Philippines’ resupply mission in the Ayungin Shoal. In a recent interview with ANC, he emphasized that the country should continue to assert its rights over the disputed territory but also recommended adding a civilian outpost to showcase the government’s commitment to peaceful resolution.
Carpio explained that the Ayungin Shoal is an integral part of the Philippines’ exclusive economic zone (EEZ) and that it is the country’s duty to protect and preserve this vital resource. However, he cautioned against provocative actions that could escalate tensions with China, which has been claiming sovereignty over the area.
According to Carpio, a civilian outpost in the Ayungin Shoal would serve as a symbol of Philippine sovereignty and demonstrate the government’s commitment to peaceful resolution of disputes. He also stressed the importance of continuing the resupply mission, highlighting that it is essential for maintaining the Philippines’ rights over the territory.
