Carpio Warns: Philippines’ West PH Sea Strategy Must Shift Amid China’s Aggressive Moves

As tensions in the West Philippine Sea continue to escalate, former Supreme Court Associate Justice Antonio Carpio cautions that the Philippines is running out of options. In a recent interview with ANC, he emphasized the need for the country to change its strategy and assert its sovereign rights more effectively.

Carpio pointed out that China’s aggressive actions in the disputed waters have been met with limited response from the Philippine government. He argued that the current approach has not yielded the desired results and it is time for a new strategy.

The former justice highlighted the importance of international law, particularly the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS), in resolving maritime disputes. He stressed that the Philippines should focus on building a strong case based on the principles of UNCLOS to support its claims.

Carpio’s warnings come as China continues to exert its influence in the region. The Philippines must adapt and evolve its approach to protect its interests and ensure the long-term security of its territory.
