1Sambayan, a prominent opposition coalition, has written to Senate President Francis ‘Chiz’ Escudero, calling on the upper chamber to initiate preparations for the impeachment trial of Vice President Sara Duterte. In their letter, convenors Antonio Carpio and Howard Calleja emphasize the importance of careful planning to ensure a transparent and efficient process.
The coalition has proposed several key steps to streamline proceedings, including authorizing the Senate President to issue summonses within 15 days and requiring the prosecution to submit replies within 5 days. Additionally, they recommend empowering the Senate President to order the preservation of records related to the impeachment case.
Meanwhile, former IBP National President Atty. Domingo Cayosa has stressed that the Senate should begin the impeachment trial, citing provisions of the 1987 Constitution that mandate due process in impeachment proceedings.
