Carpio emphasized that while Duterte can still present evidence, her failure to file a timely response has significant consequences. He noted that it’s up to the next Senate whether to allow her to present evidence past the deadline.
The Supreme Court can also intervene and order the Senate to proceed with the impeachment trial. Carpio expressed confidence that the Senate will comply with the Court’s instructions.
The impeachment complaint against Duterte includes several serious allegations, including the use of confidential funds, unexplained wealth, and involvement in extrajudicial killings in Davao City.
