Carpio Warns of Constitutional Crisis over Cayetano’s Snap Election Call

Retired Supreme Court Associate Justice Antonio Carpio has expressed concerns that Senator Alan Peter Cayetano’s call for a snap election may be unconstitutional. In an interview with ANC, Carpio emphasized the importance of adhering to the constitutional framework governing elections in the Philippines.

Carpio pointed out that the Constitution mandates that presidential and vice-presidential elections should take place on the second Monday of May every six years, except in extraordinary circumstances. He noted that Cayetano’s call for a snap election would require amendments to the Constitution, which is a lengthy and complex process.

The legal expert also highlighted the potential risks of holding an early election, including the possibility of disenfranchising certain groups of voters, such as Overseas Filipino Workers (OFWs) who may not be able to cast their ballots on time.
