Citing the 2016 Arbitration Award, which ruled in favor of the Philippines, Carpio stressed that the award is not just a historical document but a living instrument that guides the country’s actions. He noted that the Philippines has a legitimate claim to the West Philippine Sea, and it is essential to assert this right.
Justice Carpio also highlighted the importance of building strategic partnerships with other nations to counterbalance China’s growing influence in the region. He proposed that the Philippines should engage in diplomatic efforts to rally international support for its claims and to prevent further militarization of the disputed waters.
