Carpio’s Call to Action: Philippines Should Accept Court Challenge from Vietnam and Malaysia

As tensions rise in the West Philippine Sea, former Supreme Court Associate Justice Antonio Carpio emphasizes the importance of resolving territorial disputes through international law. In a recent interview with ANC’s Karen Davila on Headstart, Carpio stressed that the Philippines should consider accepting the challenge from Vietnam and Malaysia to settle overlapping Exclusive Economic Zones (EEZs) via a court of law.

Carpio’s suggestion is rooted in his long-held belief that international law can provide a framework for resolving disputes between nations. By accepting the challenge, the Philippines would be taking a crucial step towards establishing a peaceful resolution to the issue.

The Supreme Court Associate Justice also highlighted the significance of the 2016 arbitral ruling that invalidated China’s claims in the South China Sea. Carpio emphasized that this ruling serves as a benchmark for other nations to follow and uphold international law.
