Former Supreme Court Associate Justice Antonio Carpio recently underscored the Philippines’ rights to explore oil resources in the West Philippine Sea without needing China’s permission. According to Carpio, the 2016 Hague ruling established the country’s sovereignty over the disputed waters, solidifying its authority to conduct exploratory activities.
Carpio emphasized that the Philippines is not bound by any agreement or treaty with China that would necessitate seeking approval for energy exploration. The former Justice noted that the country’s exclusive economic zone (EEZ) extends 200 nautical miles from its coast, encompassing the West Philippine Sea.
He highlighted the importance of asserting the Philippines’ rights and interests in the disputed waters, citing the need to protect its territorial integrity and ensure the well-being of its people. Carpio’s stance reflects his long-standing advocacy for the country’s claims in the South China Sea.
