Justice Carpio on the Marcos Legacy in West Philippine Sea Disputes

As the Philippines commemorates the 9th anniversary of its arbitral win against China, former Senior Associate Justice Antonio Carpio shares his insights on how to strengthen the country’s claim over the Kalayaan Island Group. In a recent interview with ANC Headstart, Carpio emphasized the importance of upholding sovereignty and territorial integrity in the face of assertive claims by neighboring countries.

Carpio highlighted that Ferdinand Marcos Sr.’s actions in the 1970s, including his fortified claim over the Kalayaan Island Group, laid the groundwork for the country’s current stance on the West Philippine Sea. However, Carpio noted that it is now up to the next generation, particularly those in positions of power, to cement this legacy and ensure that the country’s rights are protected.

In a call to action, Carpio urged Filipinos to remain vigilant and work together to safeguard their nation’s interests in the region. He also emphasized the need for international cooperation and diplomacy to resolve disputes peacefully, rather than resorting to aggressive measures.
